Usually not. An LFT can generally be done without fasting. Some doctors prefer an 8–10 hour fast if the LFT is being done together with a lipid profile in the same draw. Do avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, as it temporarily raises liver enzymes and can produce a misleading result.
Raised SGPT (ALT) indicates that liver cells are under some strain. The most common cause in urban India is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, but alcohol, certain medications, viral hepatitis and even recent intense exercise can also raise it. A mildly raised value on its own is not a diagnosis — your doctor will interpret it alongside the rest of the panel and your history.
