What actually happens when a phlebotomist comes to your door, how to prepare, what it costs, and the one thing that genuinely affects whether your result is reliable.
Home sample collection is a phlebotomist visiting your home to draw the sample, which is then transported to the laboratory for analysis. Done properly it is exactly as accurate as visiting the lab — what matters is correct tubes, prompt labelling and controlled transport, not where the needle goes in. At Kranthi Diagnostics it is free on bookings of ₹1,000 or more; smaller bookings carry a nominal visit charge, confirmed before your slot. Is it as accurate as going to the lab?
This is the question worth answering properly, because the reassuring version — "yes, of course" — skips what actually matters.
Accuracy does not depend on where the sample is drawn. It depends on what happens in the minutes and hours afterwards. In laboratory medicine, the majority of errors occur before a sample reaches the analyser, and they are almost always one of these:

So the honest answer is: home collection is as accurate as lab collection when the transport chain is properly run. That is a fair question to ask any provider — how quickly the sample reaches the lab, and how it is carried.
In our case, samples from Pragathi Nagar, Nizampet, Kukatpally, KPHB, Miyapur and Bachupally return directly to our own laboratory. There is no third-party courier and no overnight batching.

Every health checkup package exceeds ₹1,000, so collection is always included with those. For individual tests, clubbing two or three together usually clears the threshold — a thyroid profile with vitamin D and B12, for instance.
The full amount is always confirmed before your slot is booked. Nothing is added at collection, and nothing appears at billing that you have not already agreed.
How to prepare
If your test requires fasting
Fasting blood sugar, lipid profile and most full body packages need an 8 to 12 hour overnight fast. Water is allowed and genuinely helps — mild dehydration raises creatinine and haematocrit. Avoid tea, coffee, milk and anything sweetened.
Book an early-morning slot. This is the real advantage of home collection for fasting tests: you fast while asleep, the phlebotomist comes from 6:30 AM on request, and you eat immediately afterwards. No fasting through a commute.
For any collection
- Wear sleeves that roll up easily — above the elbow, comfortably
- Drink water beforehand unless the test says otherwise; well-hydrated veins make for a quicker, easier draw
- Have your prescription to hand if a doctor ordered specific tests
- Clear a surface with decent light — a dining table works well
- Mention anything relevant — blood thinners, a bleeding disorder, difficult veins, or if you tend to feel faint. It changes how we approach the draw.
If you are testing hormones
Several hormones are only meaningful at particular times. FSH, LH and estradiol are usually tested on day 2 or 3 of the menstrual cycle; progesterone around day 21; cortisol and testosterone between 7 and 9 AM. Tell us what has been prescribed and we will schedule the slot to match — testing on the wrong day wastes both the sample and your money.
What can and cannot be collected at home
Almost everything can. Blood tests, urine tests and complete health packages are all straightforward.
The notable exception is semen analysis. Sperm motility begins declining soon after collection, so the sample must reach the laboratory within 60 minutes and be kept close to body temperature. For most people the private collection room at our lab is simpler and removes the timing risk entirely.
A few specialised tests requiring immediate processing are also better done on site. We will tell you at the point of booking rather than after a wasted visit.
Who benefits most
- Anyone testing regularly — a diabetic on quarterly HbA1c, or a thyroid patient tracking TSH. Convenience is what keeps the schedule intact over years.
- Elderly patients — particularly those who would otherwise need someone to take a morning off to accompany them.
- People who are unwell — during fever, sitting in a waiting room helps nobody.
- Parents with young children — a familiar setting makes a considerable difference to a nervous child.
- Anyone with fasting tests and a commute — for the reason above.
Questions worth asking any provider
Not just us. If you are booking home collection anywhere, these are reasonable:
- How quickly does the sample reach the lab? This is the single most important factor in accuracy.
- Which laboratory analyses it? You are entitled to know, and any provider should answer plainly.
- Is the phlebotomist trained and identifiable? They are coming to your home.
- What is the total cost? Including any collection charge, confirmed before the visit.
- What preparation does my test need? A provider who does not ask is not thinking about your result.

What compromises accuracy is delay, heat exposure or an underfilled tube, none of which are inherent to collecting at home.
